Shopping Haul: Kiddy Land and Daiso

Kiddy Land is one of my favourite places in Tokyo so I thought that I would share it with you today – but do not let the name fool you – it is not just for kids! Kiddy Land in Omotesando is filled to the brim with toys, stationery and everything from tissues to cooking equipment. They are all related to your favourite Disney, Snoopy Town or Studio Ghibli characters, and more! I was showing my friend Rosa around Tokyo (who is on a year abroad, studying in Japan) and here is what we got up to.

It was a chilly day and we quickly melted into the crowds in Kiddy Land. The store has separate floors and areas for each different character.

And I’m not just talking about simply a standard collection of phone cases and pencils… Character merchandise here is hardcore. Look! You can get cotton swabs for your ears in the theme of your favourite character!

Rilakkuma is my favourite character and Rosa and I spent a considerable amount of time shopping on that floor. In fact, we may have gone a bit overboard with our shopping…

As you can see, we came out with rather a lot! We each got Rilakkuma pass cases along with lanyards; Rosa’s green one featured Rilakkuma with clovers and mine featured Rilakkuma dressed as a strawberry. Rilakkuma dressed as a panda was also adorable so Rosa bought a very fluffy panda (which we think is a washbag) and I got a panda Rilakkuma pencil case. We both got lots of folders too because they are useful for college, as well as adorable.

It turns out that Rilakkuma is rather obsessed with dressing up as other things which he is not. For instance: pandas, cats, lemons, strawberries and sushi. The most amusing of these was definitely Rilakkuma dressed as a shinkansen…

…and Rilakkuma dressed as Skytree!

I thought that I would also tell you about Daiso – not exactly hot on the tourist list but most definitely well worth a visit. It’s a‎ ¥100 store, so the equivalent to a dollar store (but half the price, of course). It is not glamorous, but it is HUGE. And there is so so much of everything, 75% of whic you just wouldn’t ever be able to find in the UK.

The four-storey flagship store can found on Takeshita Dori in Harajuku (South Exit of the JR station), but there are other stores all over Tokyo.

Takeshita Dori is one of my favourite spots in Tokyo because of all the bizarre and fun things which you can find.

Pictured here: some decorative Japlish on a mug, plus a lot of pottery which looks familiar…

They really do have everything in this store…

Looks very familiar…

Classic nonsensical Japlish!

This is for your seaweed so that you can ‘holepunch’ nori into a winky face emoji and make your obento lunch look a little bit cheerier!

I would definitely love doing the washing up if it were with this. Why is everything in Japan so cute?!?

In the end we settled with a (beautiful) spoon, some correction tape which claims to have Swarovski crystals in it (!), other little knick knacks like mini-pegs (what else would you need in life?) and a mesmerising toy thing which I can’t really explain but it’s in the photo above at the top, centre! We also decided to get a bunch of scrunchies to start a trend back in Oxford. Scrunchies are so much more comfortable to wear – they prevent heachaches which can be really annoying if you have long hair. Plus in Japan they are all so cute!

So all in all, it was a very kawaii-filled day. I hope that you get to visit these places!
